An API security checklist for fintech teams in West Africa

Before each release, check that every API call is authenticated, that each user can reach only their own data, that responses return only what is needed, and that someone is watching the logs.
Who can call it
- Every endpoint requires authentication unless there is a written reason it does not.
- Each request is checked against the user's own permissions, not only whether they are logged in.
- Admin and internal endpoints are not reachable from the public internet.
What it returns
- Responses contain only the fields the client needs.
- Error messages do not reveal system details.
- Sensitive data such as card or account numbers is masked or tokenised.
How it copes with abuse
- Rate limits and lockouts on login, payment and lookup endpoints.
- Input is validated on the server, not only in the app.
- Money-moving calls cannot be repeated by replaying a request.
How you notice problems
- Logs record who did what, and are kept where an attacker cannot erase them.
- Alerts fire on unusual volumes and failed attempts.
- An independent security test runs before major launches and then regularly.
